Voktty¶
A terminal-first AI development workspace¶
Voktty combines a native terminal, code editor, file explorer, source control, local web preview and an approval-aware AI agent in one lightweight desktop application.
Forked from Terax AI.
Native terminal¶
Interactive PTY sessions backed by Rust and portable-pty, with WebGL rendering, tabs, splits, shell integration and background streaming.
AI that works in the workspace¶
Bring your own provider key or connect a local model. The agent can inspect files, reason over terminal context and propose edits for review.
Focused code tools¶
CodeMirror editing, Vim mode, formatting, Markdown previews, AI completion, optional LSP support and conflict-aware saves.
One workspace, many environments¶
Use local shells, WSL distributions, SSH workspaces, serial devices and the experimental Docker workspace path from the same tab model.
What is Voktty?¶
Voktty is an open-source, cross-platform development environment built with Tauri 2, Rust, React 19, TypeScript, xterm.js and CodeMirror 6. It is terminal-first rather than an IDE clone: focused capabilities are added when they stay fast, lazy and resource-bounded.
The application follows a two-process model. The webview owns presentation and interaction. Rust owns operating-system access, process management, filesystem operations, network proxying and secret storage. See System overview for the design boundaries.
Choose your path¶
| You want to... | Start here |
|---|---|
| Install the desktop app | Installation |
| Open a project and run your first command | First workspace |
| Configure an AI provider | AI assistant |
| Understand tabs, panes and shells | Terminal |
| Connect WSL, SSH, serial or Docker | Workspaces |
| Contribute code | Local setup |
| Extend the app | Agents and extensions |
| Understand the architecture | Two-process model |
Product principles¶
- Terminal-first: the shell remains the fastest path through the product.
- Native boundaries: the webview never gets direct filesystem, process or secret access.
- Approval by default: mutating AI actions are visible and confirmable.
- Lazy resources: unused models, language servers, renderers and integrations should cost nothing.
- Cross-platform contracts: path, shell, PTY and process behavior are explicit for Windows, macOS, Linux and WSL.
- No account required: cloud providers use your keys, while local providers can run offline.
